Arran has often been described as 'Scotland in miniature'.  It has all the country’s classic landscape characteristics, ecosystems and wildlife squeezed into one small area easily reached by ferry.  There are endless opportunities for Biological fieldwork, just a stone’s throw from the front door of the Lochranza Centre.

Freshwater ecology studies can be practiced on clear mountain streams teaming with invertebrate life. The water is also used by the local whisky distillery, so we can consider the impact of this on the flora and fauna.  We conduct marine investigations on our rocky shore, watched over by the resident seal colony. Moorland, ecological succession and land management studies will be carried out in the habitat of our majestic red deer and squirrels.

There are also salt marsh, woodland and pasture habitats, all offering a wealth of opportunities for data collection techniques and population sampling through short assessment studies or full investigations.  A range of statistical techniques and IT skills are included in all our topics.

Courses are flexible and can be tailored to suit each group; be it through individual investigations, a short piece of assessed coursework or learning sampling and data recording techniques. They are constantly updated to fit the requirements of exam boards.  We will liaise with you in advance to ensure we deliver a programme that ticks all the right boxes and also gives the students a memorable and fun experience.

Your course will be taught by subject specialists, Honours Graduates with an enthusiasm for their subject and extensive experience working outdoors. They have completed Mountain Leader Training, are First Aid qualified and have undergone a full disclosure process.
