"Tutors are well trained to deliver Effective Field Studies in difficult conditions and rough terrain which is of huge benefit to lone geology teachers" - Liz Richards, Geology Lecturer, Coleg Sir Gar
"The moment I set foot on Arran I relax, as I know that myself and the students are in expert hands" - Dr Keith Oak, havering Sixth Form College
‘One of the best locations for fieldwork in Europe’
(Geological Society 100 great geosites project)
With rocks that span the last 600 million years of Earth’s history and a huge variety of both small and large scale structures most of the principles and processes of geology contained within a geology syllabus can be taught on Arran. Many exposures are accessible on foot from Lochranza Outdoor Education Centre. A number of the sites we visit are used as text book examples.
Our courses are constantly updated. However we have recently carried out a major revision of our Geology course to make sure it fits with exam board requirements. Students will now follow the new course developed in communication with OCR and WJEC & geared to cover the requirements of the Practical Endorsement or C.P.A.C ( Common Practical Assessment Criteria) which all students are required to do and pass in order to be allowed to undertake a University Science Degree.
Long investigations in the field may have disappeared but our investigative approach has not. More frequent, short investigations throughout the course provide show that students have displayed the required competency by applying their new skills & knowledge.
Alongside the rich variety of rocks and structures, Arran is blessed with world class ‘must see’ sites including Hutton’s Unconformity, Drumadoon Sill, and the Giant Myriapod trail. Sites such as these have helped Arran reach its recent status as a ‘pending’ Geopark! A famous professor once said that the best Geologist is the person who has observed the most rocks. In this respect students visiting Arran are off to a good start. This variety enables the Centre to tick a large number of the requirements for the Specific Practical Assessment (S.P.A). We generally incorporate this with mathematical skills into our general teaching topics.
Your course will be taught by subject specialist, Honours Graduates with an enthusiasm for their subject & experience working outdoors. They have attended a Mountain Leader Training Course, have a First Aid qualification & have undergone a full disclosure process.
Our geology course can be tailored to both GCSE & A-Level requirements.
Why not make a choice which will inspire your students & create a long lasting memory of a rewarding, fun field work experience in a fantastic place.
