"Tutors are well trained to deliver effective field studies in difficult conditions and rough terrain which is of huge benefit to lone geology teachers"

"The moment I set foot on Arran I relax, as I know that myself and the students are in expert hands"

Geology

‘One of the best locations for fieldwork in Europe’

(Geological Society 100 Great Geosites Project)

With rocks that span the last 600 million years of Earth’s history and a huge variety of small and large scale structures, nearly all geological principles and processes can be taught on Arran. Many exposures are accessible on foot from the Lochranza Centre. A number of our sites are quite literally textbook examples!

Our courses are constantly updated, and fit exam-board requirements. School groups follow courses developed in conjunction with OCR and WJEC, geared to cover the requirements of the Practical Endorsement or  CPAC (Common Practical Assessment Criteria).

By fostering a strong investigative approach through frequent, short investigations over their time here, students can demonstrate required competencies by applying their new skills and knowledge.

Alongside the rich variety of rocks and structures, Arran is blessed with world-class ‘must see’ sites including Hutton’s Unconformity, Drumadoon Sill, and the Giant Myriapod trail. Sites such as these have helped Arran reach its status as a ‘pending’ UNESCO Geopark!  A famous professor once said that the best geologist is the person who has observed the most rocks. In this respect students visiting Arran are off to a good start. This variety enables the Centre to tick a large number of the requirements for the Specific Practical Assessment (SPA). We offer Geology courses tailored to both GCSE and A-Level requirements.

Your course will be taught by subject specialists, Honours Graduates with an enthusiasm for their subject and extensive experience working outdoors. They have completed Mountain Leader Training, are First Aid qualified and have undergone a full disclosure process.

Above all, Arran will inspire your students, leaving them with long-lasting memories of a fun and fulfilling field trip on a fantastic island.

We are currently developing the study resources page of our website, where you will be able to find examples of some of our studies, and access to our online teaching resources.

As part of the Lochranza Centre's contribution to the 2020 virtual Festival of Geology, we have also created this PowerPoint, showcasing what we do at the Centre, and Arran's spectacular geology. www.festivalofgeology.org.uk
